The dash cam video shows the moment when a dump truck, carrying a load of gravel to a location on Jester Boulevard on RM 2222, runs an intersection striking several vehicles, runs off of the roadway, and falls below an overpass causing another vehicle to crash into a utility pole. Austin-Travis County paramedics reportedly transported four people to a nearby hospital.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the owner of the dump truck recently stated that he performs weekly equipment safety checks on the truck. Investigators are now looking into the likelihood of ‘distracted driving’ being the cause of the accident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is becoming the most common cause of motor vehicle accidents in the country. The issue is particularly worrisome when trucks, especially a dump truck weighing 30,000 pounds or more, run out of control. Because trucks are typically 10 times the weight of the average passenger vehicle, occupants of surrounding vehicles are far more likely to be severely injured or killed when they’re involved in an accident with a truck.
