Since the 1970s, Monsanto’s product Roundup has been the leading herbicide and drying agent for farmers, landscapers, and even home gardeners. Statistics show that over 80 percent of crops in the United States are sprayed with Roundup, and it is considered to be an essential product by many agricultural operations.
Because of its widespread use, it should be no surprise that many people were very concerned when news spread of the serious and possibly life-threatening risks of exposure to Roundup. Since then, many people who used Roundup and suffered medical problems have filed lawsuits, resulting in thousands of cases across the country.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) began looking into possible carcinogenic qualities of Roundup and related herbicides in recent years. The IARC found that glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, is a Group 2A carcinogen. This carcinogen is linked to the following severe health conditions, among others:
People who are at a particularly high risk of developing these conditions work with Roundup on a regular basis. This includes those who use Roundup as part of their job duties or who have used the product for their personal gardens or lawns for some time. Others who are regularly exposed to Roundup that is used near their homes or workplaces – but who do not directly use it – can also be at risk.
Roundup has already been the subject of some landmark decisions in civil court, demonstrating that people diagnosed with certain cancer are able to link their condition to the dangerous product. Consider the following verdicts:
As you can see, there is enough evidence of the link between Roundup and certain types of cancer to convince juries that Monsanto was negligent. However, Roundup continues to be sold and marketed as safe for use.
If you have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or other serious conditions after regular exposure to Roundup, you should not wait to discuss your rights with an Austin personal injury lawyer. Monsanto should be held accountable for selling an unreasonably dangerous product without the proper warnings to consumers. However, Monsanto has shown it will aggressively fight against liability in Roundup cases, so having the right legal representation is critical for cancer victims.
